Firefox quantum is here! But should you really care?

by | Nov 15, 2017 | Apps, Featured

In one word, yes. In more than one word, definitely yes, it’s f*cking fast now.

With the arrival of chrome, firefox went into relative obscurity but for all the right reasons. Firefox was noticeably much slower than chrome, and although it didn’t consume as much ram as chrome did, the memory constraints for most people were limited.Chromehrome has ever since grown to become the undisputed king among browsers. Rest is history.

WHAT’S NEW FROM TECHNICAL STANDPOINT?

Skip this part if you are not a “nerd”.

So the new Firefox comes with ‘quantum CSS”. What? Are you still here? Well, nerd or not I guess you haven’t gotten laid either so it matters not. Quantum CSS is Mozilla’s  new CSS engine written in Mozilla’s own RUST programming language and is based on the SERVO parallel browser engine (I lost you didn’t I ?)  For an in-depth explanation about the inner working of quantum CSS check out this blog post by Mozilla.

Firefox also has a new UI, PHOTON and boy is it not a visual eye-candy? I LOVE IT. It is surely modern now right from the redesigned menus, the dark theme, squared tabs and sh*t. Its dope and you probably would feel the same.

firefox is now 2x faster

WHY SHOULD YOU CARE?

Probably because it is (in my opinion) faster and more responsive than chrome ever seemed. The memory consumption is almost half of what chrome would take. Mozilla claims that it’s twice as fast as the older Firefox (the sad one). And it does feel fast. It feels responsive af. The subtle animations while bookmarking, refreshing a tab and similar sh*t (explore yourself) are a joy to look at. The new tab has seen a redesign too but its just okay. It is surely something new but I don’t know how well it will go with the masses. That’s pretty much it in my opinion. For someone who claims to be dedicated to free and open source software, I still made exceptions with chrome. But now I honestly don’t see a need for chrome and I do encourage you to at least give one chance to Firefox quantum. You would love it yourself I don’t need to sell it to you.

FIREFOX IS COOL AGAIN AND ITS FUTURE LOOKS SO MUCH BRIGHTER NOW.
